ADVANCEMENT
REQUIREMENT CHANGES

In the 1995-97 edition of Boy Scout Requirements, changes were made to the requirements for the ranks of Tenderfoot and Second Class, and Criteria for alternate rank requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class were added.

A number of merit badges were revised, and eight Merit Badges were discontinued. The changes became effective immediately, except for Scouts who had already started a merit badge, who may continue to use the old requirements. 

Scouts may continue to work on discontinued Merit Badges until they turn 18, so long as they can find a Merit Badge Counselor, and an actual Merit Badge patch is still available for purchase.

Requirement 3(b) was changed to read as follows:

  1. (b) Demonstrate you know how to tie the following knots and tell what their uses are: two half hitches and the tautline hitch.

Requirement 11(b) was changed to read as follows:

  1. (b) Show first Aid for the following:
  • Simple cuts and scratches
  • Blisters on the hand and foot
  • Minor burns or scalds (first degree)
  • Bites or stings of insects and ticks
  • Poisonous snakebite
  • Nosebleed
  • Frostbite and sunburn

Second Class

Requirement 6(c) was changed to read as follows:

  1. (c) Demonstrate first aid for the following:
  • Object in the eye
  • Bite of a suspected rabid animal
  • Puncture wounds from a splinter, nail, and fish hook
  • Serious burns (2nd degree)
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Shock
  • Heat stroke, dehydration, hypothermia, and hyperventilation
